Job description
- Serves as Post’s principal advisor on Senegalese protocol and diplomatic matters, local customs, official relations with the government.
- Provides expert advice based on sound analytical reasoning, on sensitive or complex matters regarding the relations with the host country.
- Develops high level host government, private sector, political and religious sector contacts to sustain and further cooperation.
- Administers the Mission’s contact database program and serves as database trainer and expert.
- Provides translator/interpreter services to Post on a case-by-case basis, through translation of official documents, diplomatic notes, bilateral agreements, annual reports and other instruments as required.
Job requirements
- Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in business office experience in a bilingual (French/English) environment including maintaining contacts with Government officials, diplomatic corps, dignitaries.
- Must have a detailed understanding of local political and economic sectors, social community members as well as diplomatic and international organizations, protocol standards, local institutions and very important people at Post.
- A university degree in International Relations, Law, Administration, Languages/Linguistics, or Communication Sciences is required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and strong intercultural awareness are required.
- Must be timely and accurate in drafting, editing, and translating a wide variety of documents in English and French.
- Must be able to do research and analysis in a variety of technical and complex subject matter fields.
- Must be able to work extensive hours, including weekends, holidays and late evenings, with all appropriate appearance and dress for the occasion.
- Must be comfortable in an automated environment with the ability to understand.
- English: Level IV (Fluent) written/spoken/read, including the ability to translate is required.
- French: Level IV (Fluent) written/spoken/read, including the ability to translate is required.
- Wolof: Level III ( Good working Knowledge) written/spoken/read is required.

Job description
Ihe Agricultural Marketing Specialist (entry-level specialist) is responsible for representing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) in Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali,Niger Mauritania, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and The Gambia.
The incumbent facilitates linkages between U.S. exporters and host country importers, identifies marketing practices to increase trade opportunities, and resolves market access issues affecting U.S. agricultural products. Develops and maintains broad range of industry and government stakeholder contacts (working-to-mid levels) to gain cooperation on substantive agricultural matters.
Analyzes and drafts reports on agricultural commodities, market developments, and market policy. Implements and evaluates various planned projects and activities, including market promotional and trade development programs.
Job requirements
- Minimum three years of work experience required in one or more fields of agricultural economics, agricultural/product marketing, agricultural policy, business/project management, and marketing analysis/research that includes significant analysis and report writing.
- Good knowledge of FAS goals, programs, reporting requirements and procedures, and of U.S. agricultural policies and trading practices. Thorough knowledge of agricultural practices, market conditions, and government policies in the host country.
- Knowledge of host government structure and responsibilities of various Ministries and offices, congressional and legislative processes as it relates to economic, trade, and agricultural policy matters is required.
- Good understanding of international agreements relating to agricultural policy and agricultural economic supply/demand theories and concepts.
- Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Food and Agricultural Marketing, Agriculture, Agribusiness, or International Trade is required.
Skills and abilities
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) to create documents and spreadsheets, maintain and update databases, and develop presentations.
- Use of FAS specialized software for reporting purposes.
- Must be familiar with agricultural production, global agricultural trade concepts, general marketing strategies, and economic supply/demand concepts. Required to analyze statistical data and maintain data sets for accurate commodity and trade reporting.
- Drafts detailed, complex reports on markets and trade policy, as needed. Must have excellent time management skills to cope with the diversity of work and deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively with government, public, and private individuals to obtain information and resolve trade issues.
- Level 4 (Fluent) reading/speaking/writing in French; and Level 4 (Fluent) reading/speaking/writing in English are required. (This may be tested.)
